SLS Free Shampoo: Achieve a Healthy, Balanced Scalp

SLS Free ShampooAre you looking for an SLS free shampoo? You’ve come to the right place! Sulfate-free shampoo has become quite popular, as health- and beauty-conscious consumers are turning to more natural hair care. The way we see it, everyone should be using SLS free shampoo. Sulfates are damaging ingredients that are truly unnecessary in cosmetics. You may know to avoid products with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), but here’s why:

Sodium lauryl sulfate is found in about 90% of shampoos worldwide. Because of its detergent quality and cheap cost, the SLS in shampoo is the same ingredient found in household cleaning products and auto garages. In the same way it dissolves the grease on car engines, SLS also dissolves the oils on your skin. Shampoos containing SLS can cause:

  • Drying effects on skin and hair
  • Eye or scalp irritation
  • Tangled, split or frizzy hair

But you must be wondering how SLS free shampoo can actually clean the hair! Well, all shampoos need detergents. Our cleansers, for example, contain gentle surfactants to remove dirt, not your scalp’s natural oils. Use Me cleansers have been known to reverse skin irritation, to prevent excess oil production, and to maintain a healthy, balanced scalp. Along with the natural, organic ingredients in Use Me products, we attribute many of these benefits to the lack of sulfates!

We know that a healthy scalp means healthy, beautiful hair. Our SLS free shampoo works with your body, not against it, to nourish and holistically cleanse your scalp. Visit our website to learn more about our sulfate free products.

Eco-Chic Tip of the Week: Natural Makeup Brush Cleaners

Since unwashed makeup brushes can harbor breakout-causing bacteria, it’s a good idea to lather them up on a regular basis. Unfortunately, many commercial brush cleaners can contain harsh, not-so eco-chic chemicals, so stick to gentle, non-toxic cleansers. Many beaut-istas swear by pure castile soap, such as Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps (which are USDA certified organic and certified Fair Trade!).

You could also try these eco-chic recipes that will extend the life of your brushes and your skin:

  • Witch hazel, lavender oil, and tea tree oil, as seen in this video.
  • Olive oil, liquid castile soap, and vinegar, as seen on Crunchy Betty.

How We Reduce Our Carbon Footprint: Smart Packaging

Being a comprehensive eco-conscious product line means exploring all aspects of your business when reducing your negative impact on the natural environment. One area that is often overlooked—by companies and consumers alike—is packaging.

At Use Me, our first step was to create consumer-friendly product bottles. Glass or ceramic are the safest from a health standpoint, but production can be very energy intensive and glass or ceramic can be dangerous in the shower. Unfortunately, plastic was the most logical material, but there were a couple different varieties:

  • Plant-based biodegradable plastics seemed like the best option, but they tend to break down overtime—especially in the shower.
This would not have been realistic for the product and would not allow customers to reuse the bottles.
  • Recycled plastic was also a great option, but it can contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that leaches into products (whether it’s baby formula, microwave dinners, or beauty products!). BPA can be absorbed into the body and has been linked to a number of problems including cancer, heart disease, liver disease, obesity, and is especially problematic for pregnant women.

So, we settled on recyclable BPA-free plastic with specific pumps that emit controlled amounts of product. This way, our customers can feel safe about leaving their bottles in the shower and reusing them, and conserve product by using only the recommended amount.

Amazing Before and After’s From America’s Beauty Show

[slideshow]

A select few at Americas Beauty Show in Chicago were fortunate enough to feel the full effects of Use Me’s eco-chic luxury products. Our 100% recylced and recylcable booth was constructed to support two mini hair stations. It was amazing to watch as our expert stylists completely transformed these women in less than 45 minutes. All of us at the show were moved by the fact that some were even brought to tears by their new hair, achieving looks they never thought possible. Needless to say, every model bought product.

What Your Shampoo Is Telling You: switching to a sulfate-free product

You need to understand that if you have been using a product containing sulfates all your life, you have become accustomed to the feeling of unnatural cleanliness on top of your head. Not only that, but you have created a vicious cycle in which your body is over compensating for the natural oils that have been striped away every time you wash your hair (see What Your Shampoo Is Telling You: what are sulfates and why are they bad for you?) and thus produces an increased amount of oil every time.  So, the when you being using our sulfate-free products, you may feel a little more substance in your hair then you are used to and your hair will probably be much more oily. This is normal. You will have begun a natural, regenerative process that will get better with time. If you stick with our products your scalp will be able to return to normal and you will be amazed at how much better your hair looks and feels.
